As temperatures drop and fireplaces are used more, chimney fires become a serious seasonal hazard. The good news? Most chimney fires are preventable with proper care and awareness.

Help protect your home and family by following these safety tips:

Have your chimney inspected and cleaned annually by a certified professional

Burn only dry, seasoned wood — wet or green wood creates excess creosote buildup

Never burn trash, cardboard, or paper, which can spark chimney fires

Install a chimney cap to keep out debris, animals, and moisture

Watch for warning signs such as loud cracking or popping sounds, dense smoke, or a strong, hot odor

🚨 If you suspect a chimney fire:
Get everyone out of the home immediately and call 911. Do not attempt to extinguish it yourself.
